What Is Pelvic Tilt?
Pelvic Tilt is a change in the position of the pelvis that alters its angle relative to the spine, hips, and legs. The pelvis may rotate forward, backward, or shift unevenly from side to side. This position can influence standing posture, walking mechanics, and the way movement loads the lower back and hip region.

Key Takeaways About Pelvic Tilt
- Pelvic tilt describes position, not a diagnosis.
- The pelvis can rotate forward, backward, or unevenly.
- Pelvic tilt is not the same as pelvic floor dysfunction.
How Pelvic Tilt Works

Pelvic tilt describes the pelvis rotating around the hip joints or shifting in relation to the trunk. An anterior tilt moves the front of the pelvis downward and may increase the curve of the lumbar spine. A posterior tilt moves the front upward and may reduce that curve. A side-to-side shift creates an uneven position.

Assessment usually compares the pelvis with nearby landmarks, including the lumbar spine and hip joints, during standing and movement. The position can change as you sit, walk, bend, or brace your trunk. A posture correction plan may address mobility, muscle control, and movement habits when those factors contribute to the observed pattern.

From the Advanced Injury Care Clinic team
When we assess pelvic tilt, we observe the pelvis during standing and simple movements. We also consider the lumbar spine, hips, and movement control together, because pelvic position can change with the task. Our posture correction work focuses on the pattern that appears during real movement, not on one static position alone.
Pelvic Tilt in Practice: A Real-World Example
A person who spends much of the day seated may stand with the pelvis rotated forward and the lower back more curved. During posture correction, the clinician observes whether that position changes with hip movement, trunk control, or a change in standing habits.
